I have been so wrapped up in putting together the springtime issue of 3191Q, that I nearly forgot about one of our favorite springtime activities—dying eggs. Crisis quickly and efficiently averted this morning.

We tried out a method we had seen in an old issue of Martha Stewart with beautiful shibori-like results. We used store-bought egg dye, but this would work just as well with natural dyes.

If I have any advice for crafting with kids (both littles and bigs), it’s this— keep it simple. Limit the choices and options, so everyone can focus. In this case, we didn’t mix up all the colors (we’ll save the others for another day), nor did we attempt more than one method of resist dying, just the rubber bands.

The results were saturated and true, and we made a big enough mess with just the three colors anyway.

Happy spring, everybody.
